Root Canal Therapy

A root canal is a procedure that is performed on the tooth’s interior. It’s a form of treatment that becomes necessary when infection or inflammation of the tooth’s pulp occurs. This condition can come from several causes: deep decay in the tooth, restorations that have leaked, a cracked or chipped tooth, or repeated procedures on the same tooth. In some cases, the pulp can be damaged by trauma, but no damage is visible. If left untreated, these types of conditions cause pain or an abscess.

Retreatment

Endodontic retreatment most commonly becomes necessary when the original root canal treatment becomes reinfected due to recontamination (new bacteria) or occasionally due to bacteria that was difficult to remove. Some teeth that have undergone endodontic treatments do not heal properly or have lasting symptoms after treatment. While this is rare, sometimes, a root canal treatment may fail due to bacteria that could not be removed at the initial treatment, or new bacteria has entered the tooth, leading to discomfort or signs of infection. In these situations, the tooth can often be maintained by undergoing a second endodontic procedure. Our root canal retreatment procedure works with your dentist to offer you consistent care throughout.

Apical Surgery

Apical surgery is a simple procedure that is sometimes indicated to try to save damaged teeth. Occasionally, it is required to directly clear the infection surrounding the roots of the tooth surgically. Also referred to as an apicoectomy, it is a procedure that allows direct access to the infected area around and beyond the end of the root of the tooth, to areas that are not accessible by regular root canal treatment. With a small incision in the gums, the infected area around the root tip is cleaned, and the end of the root is sealed. The procedure is performed with local anesthetics to prevent discomfort during treatment.

Cracked Teeth

Cracked or chipped teeth can present themselves in various ways. The MPC dental specialists will focus on treatment and outcome for your tooth that works for the nature, location, and seriousness of the crack. Chipped, cracked or fractured teeth account for most of all dental injuries. Even if small, any dental injury should be examined by a dentist or an endodontist right away. Otherwise, neighboring teeth could suffer an additional, unnoticed injury that will only be detected by a thorough dental exam.

Dr. Helen Tsao

Dr. Helen Tsao was born in Alabama but grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She moved to Houston to attend Rice University and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Biological Sciences. She decided to pursue dentistry because of its unique blend of science, artistry, and service to the community. She graduated from the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston (UTHSC) and worked as a general dentist in the greater Houston area for several years before returning to school to pursue a specialization in endodontics. She graduated with a Master of Science in Endodontics from UTHSC.

Dr. Sean LaRue

Dr. Sean LaRue was born and raised in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Upon graduating from high school, he moved to the United States to attend the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated cum laude and earned a degree in Civil Engineering. From there he moved to Houston to pursue a career in dentistry where he attended the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston and earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery. After four years of private practice as a general dentist, he decided to pursue his passion for Endodontics and returned to the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, where he completed his residency program and earned his Endodontics Certificate and Master of Science in Dentistry.
